Masciarelli Villa Gemma Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
2003

Really dark purple in the glass. Big brooding nose with obvious blackberries and spice a secondary licorice note on the end. The mouth feel is huge, coating but with heavy tannins at this point, drying oakiness on the mid palate is unpleasant, good structure and obvious quality, lacking on fruit but a long finish. Wine not mature, drink 2012+ (SN - 09/08)

TCD OPINION

Villa Gemma can be the best Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine but in this vintage it falls short, go for the 1998 if you can find it.
Perhaps the finest example of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo in top vintages gaining scores of 93/100 from Winespectator and Robert Parker. The Villa Gemma is a wine from low yields using lots of new oak to produce a polished artistic wine.

TCD Score: 89/100
89 Points for a good effort from Masciarelli. The wine is very strong MdA but we feel at this price there is better. This is not the best vintage, 2003 was very hot across Italy and produced a few unbalanced wines, that and the combination of oak that is too heavy in this bottle keeps it under 90 points.

Robert Parker Score88/100

Masciarelli

Pioneer winemaker Gianni Masciarelli began this estate in 1981 and led the charge to bring Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines to the forefront of Italian wines both internally and abroad. His greatest wine, the Villa Gemma is generally regarded as the best Montepulciano d'Abruzzo ever made.
